The scratches if only in the finish can be polished out with 0000 steel wool and a cream polish. If the scratches are deeper and go into the wood you may be able to reduce them with steam from a wet cotton cloth and a med. hot iron, and some patience since it is a slow process some times. The veneer is more of a problem for those with out professional skills. Once you know what wood you need go to Van Dykes.com for the glue and veneer. You may need to refinish to get a decent color match, but be prepared to have to fiddle with a few stain colors too.
