You said this furniture was painted,..I'm guessing it's light..maybe even white?....if there isn't a lot of paint missing, I'd be careful with putting Watco on the whole piece, if the paint coat has lost it's gloss, it's possible the colorants in the Watco could alter the paint color....just use a mild soap solution, like a liquid dishwashing soap in warm water, and lots of old "t" shirts or flannel, augmented by a piece of white "ScotchBrite",(ONLY the white, finest)if needed, work in small areas drying well as you go and finish off by damp ragging and wiping dry the whole surface with clean water. After thorough drying for 24hrs., a few coats of Butchers wax will even out the sheen and protect it, make sure to buff off the wax thoroughly to a nice glow....
