Cast iron can also be lightly sandblasted if you can find a company with sandblasting capabilities (monument sales plant if they do their own engraving). They should do it for you at a very reasonable price. If you want it black afterward, have them spray it with Black Litho. This stuff is tough and you shouldn't have to repaint it. Your result will be a smooth black finish and will save you a lot of time and energy. I've done it several times on several pieces.
