Unfortunately you are into the great poly dilema, recoating poly is not suggested by the manufacturers, nor me. Around a fireplace could be the major test for this finish and any recoating. Most finishes can be darkened with a darker shade of shellac, varnish, or lacquer, but poly will not sink into the first coat once it has cured (about 30 days). Some sanding may work temporarily but when moderate cleaning takes place, any rough treatment, or the kids discover the weakness of this recoat you will not be very pleased. The tinted finishes are very tricky to apply so if you should decide to give it a try, practice on some other object first. And I hope you can make it stick, I am afraid I would refinish it.
