removing tobacco? from antique table

I have a mahogany table, hutch, buffet, & organ that has what I believe is tobacco/nicotine build up. It was in a smoking home. How can I clean this off without removing the finish or having to strip the wood. They are antiques about 50+ years old in very good condition. I washed it with a damp cloth & it softens, I am not sure if this is the nicotine or the finish-varnish or laquer. How will I know what kind of finish is on it?
