I will consider that the piece has an original shellac finish. If that is the case, you would start with a haptha cleaning, scrub lightly with a green 3M scouring pad, and wipe with a clean paper towel. Continue to lightly scrub and wipe until no more dirt comes off on the towel. allow an hour to dry and then use a colored danish oil stain on the bare spots, apply this a couple times in eight hours and wipe off well, 20 minutes after each application of the oil stain. Allow 24 hours for the oil stain to harden, then apply a toulene free wax. Apply the wax lightly and buff to a nice shine. If needed you may want to clean the entire piece, stain with danish oil stain, and wax, since the work area may stand out after a spot job.
