The old way was to use a board streacher to legthen the bed rails. Impossible you say? Consider taking each rail and cutting a diagnal line, starting from three inches in, from one corner to the other. Shift the rails to the new legnth and glue back together, using pipe clamps, and plane off the protruding width at each end. This will be virtually invisable and won't require a great deal of touch-up, bisquits will aid in aligning the joint. A bracket can be made to widen distance between the rails with matching wood and hardware. Design the brackets in the style of the bed and finish to match, and if you use screws to hold them on it is easily reversed.
