Old Cedar Chest-How do I clean & repair?

I just received an old cedar chest that I'm told was handmade by a great-great uncle. The entire chest is cedar inside and out including the handles. I have two questions. First, my parents keep the chest in their attic for the last 30 years so it is pretty dirty and grimy. What is the best way to clean it up? Second, the top is a little rough and bubbly in a few places. How do I go about fixing that? It appears the outside of the chest was stained (the inside is still the natural cedar color), but I can't tell if there is any other protectant that has been applied to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
