Most modern leather tops have a thin lacquer finish already. Possibly a recoat has taken place, this can be removed with a mix of 1/2 alcohol and 1/2 lacquer thinner, it will take off the leather stain possibly and a new stain and finish will have to be put back on the leather. You may, unfortunately, need to replace the leather.
