ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

old trunk - canvas

I have an old Army issued trunk (maybe a steamer trunk) that I want to "clean up." Everything I read talks about taking off the canvas. The canvas is in decent condition - it is all intact (no rips or tears or bubbling). 1) One problem is that there is what looks to be bird poop down one entire side. How do I clean this off since most likely the glue is water soluable? 2) The canvas has faded and is dingy looking. Is there a polish or something that will shine it up? Do I then need to coat it to preserve it? If so, with what? All help would be appreciated! Maggie
