The metal is tin, or tin coated, the original was most likely painted, some is dark as a result of the embossing process, and will stay dark. If you think it is rust, try Navel Jelly. some people prefer to apply a background color over the top coat, then wipe off the top of the embossed tin to show the first coat of paint. One I am working on right now was a very daper red and yellow, under the newer coats of paint. We decided to do a more subdued color scheme, since they came in all sorts of colors, some masculine and others for girls and or women. There is a very good book that is on eBay right now look to; http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=20493&item=4302427626&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
