I did a little more study. Finding that the dowels and holes are all metric size, I determined that it is European made. I understand that most of this low-end furniture made in Europe was made of Alder wood. James was right!

Problem now is finding wood close enought to match. Looks like either poplar or basswood is the closest grain. Red maple would be closer, but none available here in this area.
