Black marks on stripped mahogany table

Hi, We found and stripped (of about 15 old coats of paint) an early 1800s mahogany drop leaf table with gorgeous acanthus carved legs. The top is one board, as are the leaves. We have sanded a great number of the "gashes" out of it, but we are having trouble with the black marks, probably from hot items being put on it over the years. We have read about bleach for these, but are not quite sure how to do it. Also, if bleach doesn't work, how to finish so that the black marks are less apparent? We generally french polish our furniture, but I think the marks will still be apparent. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you again, Nancy
