The surface prep is critical in this situation, test the products you think are best together befor applying them to the door. I like a penetrating oil stain with varnish. Wait for the test to dry, then see if it will pull away with duct tape, a pressure washer, or leave it in the sun and water for a while and then try to chip it off. The fastest way to do this is with several samples all at once, to avoid too many delays in the testing process.
