repairing sun damaged spar poly cedargarage doors

i have been covering cedar fronted garage doors in maui every year for 4 yrs with spar polyurethane. i went back this year and found that the finish had flaked off on the surface, in patches, and along the v-grooves of the boards. i scraped the v-grooves out, and sanded the surfaces that flaked off, but after re-coating, the new areas stand out. it looks all scabby! what do i have to do to achieve a consistent colour? do i have to strip the whole surface? and if so, how? sanding would seem out of the question, as the material is pretty thick over most of the surface. any help anybody could give me would be much appreciated. thanks
