This is one area I rely on a good 5 minute epoxy like System 3. Very tough stuff, quick to do...and lasts a LONG time...if you can remove the handle, and the wedge(s), use a new oak wedge (stay away fom metal wedges) and fill any voids with the epoxy. let it cure and then clean it up. It'll sovle the problem forever. I have never had an epoxied handle loosen up again, and if the handle gets damaged and needs to be replaced, cut off the handle flush and drill out the remnants on the drill press, then split out whatevers left.
