There are no definative way to tell a wood by wieght alone, unless if the wood is lignam vite, iron wood, or one of the few of the heaviest. Conversly the lightest such as balsa, BTW none of these is likely to be used in furniture. I have seen a now rare mahogany that was the heaviest furniture wood I have lifted, this may be what you have. If so you are fortunate, as these items are of higher value. I remember that this wood was so dense that you could feel it pull the heat from your hand like cast iron. You should go to the library for a book on woods identification, many have good color photos of the grain so you can easily get a pretty close idea without a lab fee.
