polyurethane bad choice?

We bought some Windows with a Pine interior and also some Pine closet doors. Our finisher has stained them and applied a semi gloss polyurethane. We are second guessing the polyurethane because it seems to give the wood a "non-wood" plastic feel. Would an oil based hand rub have been a better choice to finish? Or since it's an interior project, is the polyurethane the better way to go. Really looking for the pros/cons of polyurethane vs the non polyurethane oil rubbed finish. Please help...thanks.
