Ususally removing the paper lining of an old trunk will hellp consiedrably with the smell. Lineing the trunk with cedar will also give you a nice moth proof storage and is easily done with cedar closet kit material. On the outside a good cleaning an clear coating will help prevent deterioration. Parts like handles, locks nails rivets etc. are available from several sources if you need them.
