Antique Table

PLEASE HELP I have acquired an old table. I have been told it is often called a 'D' table. It is a smallish table that has a curved piece of wood from the base to the table top. It also has rounded 'feet' and a decorative (filagree??) style edging. The edging has broken and needs to be replaced. The table has been sanded and is ready for finishing. I have absolutely no idea what sort of finish it should have or what sort of wood it is. Does anyone know anything about 'D' tables? which period, wood type, how to finish etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
