I am trying to repair and protect some 150-year-old benches in our Meetinghouse, but do not want to destroy any antique value they might have. They appear to have been stained when first constructed, but I don't know if they would have had a shellac overcoat on top of that. After regluing them (with hide glue), could I use something to clean off the oil from hand prints, then seal them with a light coat of shellac; then wax them?
