You may be able to lighten the wood with a wood bleach look at the paint stores for a two part product for the most effective bleaching. Sand very lightly or you will reveal the darkness below once more. The color I see on the piece is a mahogany with dark glazed details and heavy distressing. A medium mahogany stain should give you this color even on the walnut. You will need a dark van dyke glaze to get the two tone effect. I use an NGR stain, a sanding sealer, then glaze and lacquer, to get a semilar effect.
