Paine bureau-- newbie at refinishing

I have a bureau/dresser that I picked up last summer as a refinishing project. I've never done this before, but I liked the looks of the piece. It is a tall dresser on turned legs with a padded section on the top. It looks to be pretty well made-- no veneers that I can tell, dove-tailed drawers. Inside the top drawers are labels that say "PAINE" "Grand Rapids." After searching the net, the only reference to a Paine furniture company I can find is Paine Furniture of Boston. Does anyone know anything about Paine in Grand Rapids?

Also, since I'm new at this, can anyone recommend a good book or website to get me started? The piece is painted, but the paint is coming off quite easily, exposing the wood underneath. Do you think its possible that the piece is old enough that the paint is lead-based?

Thanks for reading. I truly appreciate any responses.
