Old Clock case restoration

I have an old clock and the finished has been badly damaged by someone painting it with white paint. The case has been stripped. I've seen several that looked nice refinished with reddish mahogony look, dark cherry look, or dark walnut that was finished with "satin" varhish. Anyone have suggestions as to how to restore it to the antique appearance rather than the ugly stripped and varnished mess I see in antique stores. E-mail with much appreciation for any help offered. Thanks Much.
