refinishing antique armoire

I have an 18th century antique oak armoire that we stripped, painted and white washed around 15 years ago. We've decide to bring it back to it's original finish.

I've aleady had it professionaly stripped. There are some cracks and little gouges in the wood. Should I repair them or leave them. Also is it okay to sand the armoire down before I stain it to take out the imperfections and small chips or should I leave it the way it is? I am worried about losing any value.

Thanks,

Rich
