A local good antique shop will have both cherry and mahogany furniture that you can study for later comparison. As for the damage you presently have, I would use a semilar color stain in a danish oil such as Watco Oil to cover them. Use 0000 steel wool to apply the stain and wipe thourly to remove any remaining stain and the dirt and wax this will loosen. After a few days look to see if the color is still good, if not re apply. Once the oil has had 36 hours to dry you can wax the entire piece. If you wish to cover the scratches with fresh finish we can go into that too, just give a shout.
