My advice to beginners is to use a Watco oil stain followed by a fresh shellac finish. Three or four coats with fine sanding between will give you a good finish, if this is a bit too shiney you can buff with the grain using 0000 steel wool and then a light coat of satin wax and polish with a soft cotton cloth.
