Repairing dark woodwork

Our 1920's house has dark woodwork (someone thought it could be be gum; it is dark like mahoghany) on the first floor. I plan to keep the dark woodwork. There are many areas where the finish is damaged. Are there some ways to blend in the color without stripping and refinishing? I am really sensitive to the odor of strong chemicals. Would it work to use a water base stain on the blemished areas? How about brown shoe polish? Is this process called reamalgation?

Thanks on advance.
