ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

Shelves on my grandmother's china cabinet

I received an antique china cabinet that was my grandmother's. I can't figure out how to get the shelves back in it, however. The shelves have two square notches in each corner like an L was removed. The chest itself has a series of triangular notches running vertically in each of the interior corners. It looks like there should be some sort of support in the chest that the shelf would rest on lodged in the notches, but my step-father that took it apart swears there wasn't anything there. Of course he can't figure out how it goes back together, either. Any suggestions or answers?
