ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

varnish over lacquer

Will varnish or polyurethane adhere to a previous lacquer finish well or should I strip the lacquer off? I would prefer not to strip as the piece I'm doing is maple with the stain or color in the lacquer. Stripping would apparently remove all the color on the wood. The ease with which this finish scratches down to bare wood is why I'm going to cover over the thin lacquer coat the manufacturer applied. Thanks
