Some of the older tops had a zink metal top placed on a wood surface, this was wraped over the edge and nailed to the edge. When these tops started to wear out they would often be repaire with a counter top material and edged with a metal 'L' shaped edge band. If you can remove the metal edge and carefully look beneath you may see what has been done here. If it seems that the top is a replacement you will need to look for signs of what was there first. A new zink top can be obtained from Van Dyke's.com also an enamel replacement top if that is what was there first.
