I was afraid of that. You may be able to remove the old finish with a half lacquer thinner and half alcohol mix. A fine steel wool pad and some rags should make short work of the rest of the finish. Wipe on the mix with the steel wool, rub with the grain, allow to penetrate for a couple minutes and wipe off with the rag. Work a 6"x6" area and when cleaned off move on, till all the finish is off, wear rubber gloves and beware of the high flamable mix. proceed with the sanding and stain if needed, lacquer and buff with steel wool till sheen matches once the finish has had 24 hours to dry.
