All the chemicels are messing things up here. I think you need to sand off a little wood and wet with denatured alcohol to see what you will get when finished. If nothing strange happens try the color of stain you like, if that dosen't go haywire try some good shellac to seal off the stain and finish with lacquer or varnish. If you start to see strange things but less so, you are on thr right path, sand some more and try again. There seems to be too many chemicles on the surface and you need to get past them, good luck, James.
