First thing, check the pulls /knobs with a magnet. If it sticks chances are the pulls are plated or colorized and that the cleaning required may destroy the finish. If the magnet doesn't stick ,you might have solid brass pulls and you can wipe off the coating with acetone or soak in small bath of acetone. The acetone will soften the coating so you can wipe it off. Use gloves, mask, proper ventillation and be aware that most chemical that you can use to strip the pulls (there are others0 have been know to cause cancer in labratory mice in the state of California. So if you don't live in that state you're more or less safe doing this. P.S. some pulls /knobs may be made of pot metal so magnet will not stick to it either.Check the back side of the pulls,if you see any silver color then they are not "brass" .0000steel wool can also help.
