veneer

I have several pieces in my house that belonged to my grandmother and father when he was little that I would like to restore. I have a few that are covered in a wood veneer. I have removed the veneer off one of the pieces so that I could sand it and stain it. The wood on this piece is ASH. We have found it scratches easy and we are having a hard time finding a fine 220 girt belt sand paper to remove the scratches. I was thinking of re-covering it with a dark cherry veneer. This would be easier correct? Would it hurt the wood? And would it be cheaper? Iím also having a hard time finding a place to purchase the veneer. Any ideas? Thank, Kel
