Removing paint from finished wood

I'm trying to remove 2-3 layers of paint from old oak, without damaging the finish underneath. It appears to be some type of varnish, although I'd guess it's at least 40 years old (and could be as much as 80). Is there a safe way to do this with either a stripper or a heat gun? The piece has a tongue and groove trim that I don't want to damage with a scraper. Any help would be much appreciated.
