Wax Top Coat: Need Help

I am refinishing a dining table, 4' x 8'. Completed a 3-coat varnish surface, polished with 4F pumise to dull gloss. I am trying to apply wax as a top coat and cannot get it to lay down without streaks (when backlighted). I have tried Butcher's wax and BriWax. Have tried small (12" x 12") sections versus large sections. Have used cloth and cheesecloth. What am I doing wrong?
