In Response To: Trunk restoration - canvas question (Rachel)

You are right the canvas was put on first then the wood bands and the hardware. You can remove the bands and hardware, but it is a major job. Use an exacto or utility knife to cut the canvas under the edges of the bands and hardware. ON the bands you can actually under cut the edges a little so that there are no edges of material showing. Let the trunk air out with good air circulation maybe even a small fan blowing over it with the lid open then stain and seal with shellac and that should get rid of the odor.
