Trunk restoration - canvas question

I am working on restoring an antique trunk (my first), but I am having a problem with the canvas. It appears that the canvas was applied and then certain decorative metal fixtures, straps, and wood pieces were placed over the canvas. I have removed all of the canvas that I can and exposed the wood underneath, however, I can't get to the canvas under the wood pieces, and I don't want to pull the wood up for fear of not being able to replace them. Additionally, the canvas has a very strange odor, almost like gasoline, and I am afraid that if I do not get it all out from under these wood pieces, that it will continue to stink! I was hoping for some advice on how to treat this (either getting rid of the smell or removing the canvas somehow). Thank you!
