ANTIQUE FURNITURE RESTORATION DISCUSSION BOARD

cleaning and finishing metal

I am cleaning a large metal wall sconce that has been sitting in the garage for the last 50 years. A lot of scroll work.

Removing the first layer of rust and grime with steel wool I've found what looks like a gold color paint with hints of green and red. It's actually pretty neat but not consistent. A lot of black shows through.

I'm not sure how to finish the metal so the color is consistent. We don't want to paint them black or polish down to the original metal.

How do I match this color and protect the metal?

Besides advice, I'd love any references to websites that deal with these issues.

Thanks!
