It's been my experience that you cannot "adapt" a head & footboard to accept another frame without changing the dynamics and stress points of the original bed. The result is a lot of squeaks and groans from old bed - not from the guests.

The best method is to use the old bed for decoration only. A couple of pieces of stained plywood, sized to bridge the height distance, can be bolted to the new frame rails, then screwed into the old head and foot. These will hold them upright and will be hidden by the mattress. This causes the least visible damage to the bed, in case you want to sell or reuse it with the original rails in the future.

I'd be interested in other opinions.
