Kidney Shaped Secretaries Desk

I inherited a kidney shaped secretaries desk. The top has a gold outline, but it's not leather. It has 4 drawers on each side and one in the middle and 2 shelves on the back. I'm trying to find out when it would have been manufactured and determine how I should refinish it because I would like to keep it in the family. I cannot find any distinguising marks like the manufactuer only a grease pencil mark under one drawer.

Where can I go to find out more information on an Early American piece like this?
