I'm working on my first trunk restoration now, so I don't claim to be an expert. I am unsure of the type of metal I am working with. In any case, I'd suggest testing any technique in a small, unnoticeable area of the trunk. On my trunk, I used naval jelly to remove the rust and am now using a drill with a metal polishing extension (round disc with metal wires extending from the edge)to bring out the shine. One website suggested steel wool. This quickly proved to be frustrating. Long live power tools. I did appreciate the other's suggestion about WD40 as the metal is slightly duller just a day later.
