If you want to get the darkest color from your stain, don't sand any smoother than 120 grit. I would try some Watco Oil stain, repeat the application a few times. If that is too light consider that the richest colors are achieved with a combination of NGR stains, or Analine dye, then a couple coats of Shellac or Lacquer Sanding Sealer followed by a dark glaze more finish and if needed tinting is added to the finish, and all is top coated with a good tough gloss lacquer and rubbed to a satin sheen.
