Removal of Butter Milk Paint

I have an 18l2 step back cupboard, originally covered with a red wash which now has a buttermilk paint (faux oak grain)which was applied around 1895. I want to removed the buttermilk paint without destroying the original red wash finish. Possible? If so, how. Charlie
