Gold Leafing Wooden Carved Mirror

I have some experience in both water and oil gold leafing but do not know how to proceed with a wooden mirror which includes intricate wood carving. Originally the mirror had a water gilded finish as evidenced by slight traces of gold under which is red bole. In previous projects which included a water gilt finish, I first applied several coats of gesso, then a bole finish before application of the gold. Because the carving is very delicate and detailed I am concerned that the multi layers of gesso will cover the finely carved detail and want to know how to proceed. Eliminate the gesso entirely and proceed with the bole before the gold or seal the surface and then apply the gold? It has been said that "a little knowlege can be a dangerous thing." Maybe that applies to me with this project. Awaiting your advice. CWB
