Please check first on the age of the crib. There have been safety issues with cribs older than, say, 15-16 years. The slats distances are too wide and can easily entrap a baby's head. There is a maxumum distance that is required in new cribs...something like 2 3/8", but don't take my word for it. Check it out for yourself. There are other safety issues too on older cribs, like protroding bolts or poor release mechanisms or ill fitting mattresses.

If a crib is old enough to need refinishing, it probably is too old to use for a child.
