You can clean and reamalgamate the existing whellac with and alcohol pad. Use lint free cotton and work and area util it begins to soften and lighten. Change to a clean surface on the pad as it gets dirty. Once you have the look you want then the shellac may be recoated with additional shellac or a good varnish. Poly is very difficult to repair and is not recommended over shellac.
