Zylene will clean the shellac permently, please skip that thought. Use only top grade shellac, many people used cheep shellac to occasionaly recoat. If they did not have dewaxed shellac that could have caused the dingy look you are seeing in the under rubbed areas. I think a sanding pad, medium soft, with 320 grit open coat sand paper will finish the rubbing deal and give you a more even surface, just watch out for any high spots. Use a very good brush and a 1.25 lb. cut shellac, sand lightly between coats, and lay down a top coat of oil based varnish if you intend everyday use of the table.
