Restoring Pine top table for kitchen use

I have an 80 year old pine top table that I am wanting to restore, and I want to restore it for use in my kitchen. I was wondering if anyone had any tips for what I should finish it with. It would be subject to getting wet, having pastry rolled on it and things like a toaster and canisters sitting on it for a long time(a few months) Is this possible/recommended? Any general tips for sanding of an old pine table?

Thanks in advance! Kate
